"Beyond the Formula" Endowed Scholarship for Statistics

Established in 2007 by the Mathematics Department to recognize and honor a mathematics and/or statistics student who has excelled in understanding mathematics and/or statistics well beyond the formula level and plans on an academic major in mathematics, mathematics education, statistics, statistics education, or a field that would require further study and use of mathematics and/or statistics.

Mathematics and Statistics are more than a collection of numbers, data, formulas, problems to be solved and various methods to solve or analyze. When students are studying mathematics and statistics in the classroom, the mission is to learn and understand ways and methods to view, organize, and quantify the situation. The goal is to attain a level of understanding that is well beyond the ability to identify and apply the appropriate formula and methodologies needed to get the answers. With this understanding, they will be better prepared to meet the challenges of problem solving and decision making in their personal lives and in their vocations. Numbers (the most easily recognized part of mathematics) are a major part of every aspect of our lives – look around, most information about anything includes numbers, mathematical models or statistical information.
