The 2017 recipient of the TIM KARNISKY MEMORIAL SCHOLARSIP FOR FIREFIGHTERS is Oscar Herrera. Oscar wrote. “Words cannot express how humbled and honored I am to receive the 2017 Tim Karnisky Memorial award. Your kind and generous support will aid me in completing my degree in Fire Protection Technology at Monroe Community College. I would like for you to know after achieving my degree at MCC I plan to continue my education at another college and my ultimate goal is to achieve a career in the fire service either as a firefighter, as an instructor or as an arson investigator. I promise to do everything in my power to honor the memory of Tim through hard work and dedication towards school and by working hard to achieve my goals and to hopefully pass it on as a member of the fire service.”

The 2017 recipient of the TIM KARNISKY MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FOR FIREFIGHTERS is Matthew LaFave. Matthew wrote, “I have spent some time in the past few days trying to learn what I can about Tim. Talking to some of his fellow brothers here at Brighton FD. I learned that he was a great fireman and all that was in his heart was the fire service. When I think of this I see myself. I believe that firefighters are born. It’s something that’s in your heart, deep down you know the importance of making a difference. I was told by firefighter Doug Lee that Tim loved the FDNY. That he always was reading up on a column or watching a video. Ryan Kenny told me how much Tim loved to ride his bike. To fire calls, to the city almost everywhere. No matter who I talked to it’s clear Tim loved the fire service with all his heart.”
