Elisa Mlynar Scholarship for Sign Language Interpretation

Established in 2010 to support and promote interest in sign language interpretation as a career choice by funding scholarships at Monroe Community College for students in their fourth semester of study who are planning to continue their education at RIT’s National Technical Institute for the Deaf (NTID), Keuka College or another accredited Interpreting Training Preparation (ITP) program.

ELIGIBILITY

1. Fourth semester MCC student enrolled in American Sign Language classes and who has been accepted into a sign language interpreting program.
2. Minimum GPA of 3.0.
3. Preference given to students with demonstrated financial need.
4. Active participation in the Deaf community, including Deaf events.
5. Submission of a one-page essay describing career goals related to interpreting with stated reasons, indicating Deaf events attended, and demonstrating financial need. The candidate must demonstrate excellent grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
6. A five-minute video in ASL describing career goals related to interpreting with stated reasons and demonstrating financial need. The video needs to be uploaded to YouTube as an “unlisted” video.
7. Two letters of reference (cannot request reference letters from current MCC ASL instructors): one letter of reference based on good moral character and one letter of reference based preparedness for upper-level undergraduate academic study in ASL-English interpretation.
