Thomas Hetherington Memorial Scholarship
Tom Hetherington, an MCC alumnus, devoted his life to the fire service and serving his community. He began his career as an Explorer with the Churchville Volunteer Fire Department and worked his way up through the ranks, eventually becoming chief. In his final years, he was Assistant Chief of the Middlesex Hose Company and a Fire Investigator for the New York State Office of Fire Prevention and Control with his K-9 partner, Taz. This scholarship honors Tom’s legacy of 28 years of service as a volunteer firefighter and EMT and seeks to support the next generation of firefighters and paramedics.

Meet the inaugural Thomas Hetherington Memorial Scholarship recipients: Matthew Alton and Colin Drake
Matthew is a career firefighter who enrolled in MCC’s fire protection technology program to help him advance in his firefighting career and enhance what he has learned on the job. Colin first became involved with the fire service when he joined the Fairport Fire Department’s Explorers post when he was 14 years old. He is now a member of the Fairport Fire Department and also a bunker with the Brighton Fire Department. Matthew and Colin both believe that scholarships like the Thomas Hetherington Memorial Scholarship will help future generations of firefighters achieve their career goals at MCC.
